Nationalist with the Midas Touch

Dr. Harsh Vardhan is not just a man of the masses, he is a man of mass movements. His dedication, drive and energy ensure that anything he handles turns to gold. He has done sterling work in the areas of health, education, environment and science & technology, and his ministerial record in handling these portfolios both at the Centre and in Delhi is there for all to see.

Disarmingly simple in personal life and transparent to a fault at the workplace, Dr. Vardhan derives his credo from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and his inspiration from the Integral Humanism of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyayaji. His services are dedicated to the poor and the marginalised and for him the sevak always comes before the swayam.

Nationalism runs in his blood and one can always trust him to come up with the Big Idea. The launch and the successful implementation of the Pulse Polio Campaign in India was his brainchild. Dr. Vardhan ensured that the message to protect children from this debilitating disease reached out to every nook and corner of the country through the involvement of all in a mass enterprise.

His indefatigable energy is now focused on launching a similar mass campaign to protect and preserve the environment. Once again, he wants every citizen of the country to undertake at least one small good green deed a day to protect Mother Nature, who will surely shower her blessings on his mission.

His achievements are too numerous to enumerate here; the awards conferred on him countless. (For details, please refer to his detailed profile).

The former Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on the occasion of the release of Dr Vardhan’s book ‘A Tale of Two Drops’, described him as ‘Swasthya Vardhan’. Another former Prime Minister, Shri Inder Kumar Gujral, had this to say of him: “If I have to single out one minister for an outstanding award in India, then my first choice will be Dr. Harsh Vardhan.”
